This funky jazz lick is from Scott Henderson and the Tribal Tech song called Mango Prom off of the Dr. Hee album. There are several great licks throughout this song. This is the first one that caught my ear. It sounds kind of outside but after breaking it down it really is pretty un-outside if that's even a word. What makes it sound cool is the tone and funky swing feel and the way he uses arpeggios and chord tones to outline each chord. With musicological thoroughness, some crack musicians and the best of intentions, John Lewis leads New Yorks American Jazz Orchestra in 15 transcriptions from one of Duke Ellington's prime periods, plus Rockin In Rhythm. If you had not heard the originals, you would probably come away from these reinterpretations exhilarated, because the AJO does a scrupulously vigorous job.
