In 2008, Spectrum Music -- a catalog division of Universal in Europe -- released six volumes of Stax Chartbusters, a series of 18-track compilations that gathers the heavyweight Memphis soul label's most popular singles. The volumes offer a cheaper and selective alternate to the exhaustive Complete Stax-Volt Singles box sets and cover the same 1959-1975 time frame. While these compilations cover a lot of ground familiar to soul fans, they are fine points of entry for newcomers and those who haven't made the switch to compact discs or digital downloads. The first volume features Isaac Hayes' "Theme from Shaft," Jean Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff," the Staple Singers' "Respect Yourself," and the Dramatics' "Get Up and Get Down."
