The exact origin of thebossa nova remained unclear for many decades, according to some authors. Within the artistic beach culture of the late in Rio de Janeiro, the term bossa was used to refer to any new trend or fashionable wave. In his book Bossa Nova, Brazilian author Ruy Castro asserts that bossa was already in use by musicians as a word to characterize someone knack for playing or singing idiosyncratically. Today, Tropicalia is chiefly associated with the musical faction of the movement, which merged Brazilian and African rhythms with rock and roll. Musicians who were part of the movement and the poet/lyricist Torquato Neto, all of whom participated in the album Tropicalia: ou Panis et Circencis, which served as a musical manifesto.
