After making a number of television appearances and appearing in the films LOL and So Undercover, Cyrus decided to return to music, choosing to go in a more grown-up direction by enlisting a number of popular rap producers, Pharrell Williams. The resulting effort, entitled Bangerz, combined crunky beats with synth pop, and stadium rock tropes. Released in October 2013, it was promoted by Cyrus with a controversial performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. While touring in support of the album, she began work on its follow-up, collaborating with the Flaming Lips; she also appeared on their album With a Little Help from My Fwends. Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz was announced and released online for free immediately after the 2015 MTV VMAs, which Cyrus hosted.
